The bats of the Binsted Woods Complex Local Wildlife Site are exceptional in diversity and number. Out of the 17 possible UK species, in 2016 a single survey session (two nights) in Binsted woods identified 13 species. Click here to read Dan Whitby's 2016 trapping survey report. This was followed up with further surveys and the 2017 report will be published in early 2018.
Recently the 14th species, Greater Horseshoe bat, was found in the area - see photo above. This puts the diversity of bat species found here on a par with Ebernoe National Nature Reserve - a species assemblage of national significance. Different bat species have different habitat requirements; the diversity of habitats available in the Binsted and Tortington area is exceptional in the region.
